The government of India will put pressure on Apple, Samsung, and other mobile phone manufacturers to prioritise the release of software upgrades that will support 5G in the nation. This is in response to concerns that a significant number of the companies’ models are not ready for the recently introduced high-speed service.
On October 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 5G services amidst a flurry of media attention. The leading telecom company Reliance Jio said that it will provide the service in four locations, while its competitor Bharti Airtel declared that it would offer the service in eight cities. The expansion of the service was slated to take place in 2019, according to statements made by both companies. However, according to three sources inside the industry and the website of Airtel, Apple’s iPhone models, including the most current iPhone 14, and many of Samsung’s top smartphones do not have software that is compatible with supporting 5G in India.
On Wednesday, senior officials from India’s telecommunications and information technology agencies, both of which are concerned about this issue, will lead a conference to discuss the expedited deployment of 5G technology.

It was mentioned in the invitation to the meeting behind closed doors that the agenda would include having talks “to prioritise” and issuing software upgrades for the purpose of supporting the high-speed network. Apple Inc., Samsung Electronics, Vivo, and Xiaomi Corp., together with the three local telecom providers, all requested a comment but did not receive an instant answer from the company. The government departments of telecom and information technology both kept mute during this whole ordeal.

According to India, the implementation of 5G in the world’s second-largest mobile market (behind China) would not only supply customers with high-speed internet, but it will also have beneficial socioeconomic implications on industries such as agriculture and health care. In August, a 5G spectrum auction with a total value of $19 billion was held.

Jio, the largest mobile network in India with over 420 million users, won the auction and obtained airwaves with a value of $11 billion. While Airtel spent more than $5 billion, Vodafone was giving away more than $2 billion. While there have been discussions between telecom players and smartphone manufacturers, one of the sources in the industry claimed that it is taking time to resolve compatibility problems between the distinct 5G technology used by Indian telecom companies and phone software. This is despite the fact that there have been discussions between the two groups.
